Sunday 19th June 2022
Doha, State of Qatar

His Excellency Dr Julius Maada Bio, President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, on Sunday 19th June 2022, held fruitful discussions with his counterpart, His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Emir of the State of Qatar, on a wide range of bilateral and multilateral issues aimed at fostering the warm and friendly relations between the two countries. The engagement was held at the Amir’s Diwan.

The two governments discussed trade and investment opportunities in agriculture, mining, and tourism, among others and explored the need to utilise Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) as a leverage to further deepen and strengthen relations for the benefit of the two countries and peoples. The two leaders believed investment opportunities would create a win-win situation for both countries.

Following the bilateral engagement between the two Heads of State, Sierra Leone’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Professor David Francis and his Qatari counterpart, His Excellency Sheikh Mohammed Bin Abdulrahman Bin Jassim Al Thani, signed six (6) Bilateral Agreements/Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs), including Memorandum for Cooperation in the Field of Higher Education and Science Research; Cooperation in the Legal Field; Agreement on the Establishment of a Joint Committee for Cooperation (JCC); Cooperation in the Fields of Tourism and Business Events; Regulation of the Employment of Sierra Leone Workers in the State of Qatar; Agreement on Mutual Assistance for Optimal Application of Custom Laws and Repression, Investigation and Combating Violations, to bolster the ties between the two countries.

It could be recalled that the State of Qatar was one of the first countries His Excellency Dr. Julius Maada Bio officially visited after the election of 2018, which demonstrates Sierra Leone’s special sentiment towards the Government and the friendly people of Qatar.

The Republic of Sierra Leone and the State of Qatar have enjoyed fruitful diplomatic, bilateral and economic relations over the past 40 years. In recent years, the two countries’ relations have flourished, resulting in Sierra Leone’s commitment to appointing non-resident Ambassadors to the State of Qatar to further effectively firm up the relations between the two countries. Qatar has supported Sierra Leone in fulfilling its development aspiration over the years, whereas Sierra Leone has supported Qatar at the multilateral level.
