Sierra Leone’s Non-Resident Ambassador to the State of Qatar, Her Excellency Haja Ishata Thomas, has engaged the Qatar Investment Authority to solicit investment opportunities for Sierra Leone.
Informing the Authority about the country’s huge untapped potential, she highlighted the energy, tourism, marine resources, mining and agriculture sectors as priority areas for investment in Sierra Leone, adding that an investment in the country will further strengthen the existing bilateral relations between the two countries.
“Sierra Leone is keen to attract credible investors as there are proven mineral reserves across the country with an unsaturated market. His Excellency the President, Dr Julius Maada Bio, values Sierra Leone’s relationship with Qatar, and he desires your country’s presence in the mineral-rich West African country. The Government of Sierra Leone grants tax concessions and other incentives to both local and foreign investors. I implore your esteemed institution to see Sierra Leone as a safe haven for investment,” Ambassador urged.
She ended by proposing an investment forum between the Republic of Sierra Leone and the State of Qatar with the view to showcasing Sierra Leone’s hidden potentials in all sectors.
Receiving the various sectoral proposals from Her Excellency, the Qatar Investment Authority’s Regional Insights and Business Development Analyst for Africa, Fahd Alaki Al Kahali, was thrilled with the presentation and assured the Ambassador that the investment proposals would be submitted to the respective funds for possible investment.
“We are pleased to discuss investment opportunities in Sierra Leone; we have a dedicated fund responsible for hospitality and we will be excited to boost the country’s tourism sector. Additionally, there is an available fund to invest in port,” he noted.
Against this backdrop, Ambassador Ishata Thomas informed the team of His Excellency the President’s desire to have a second port in the Southern part of the country and promised to avail the necessary details to the Authority with a view to investing in that project.
In another engagement, Ambassador Haja Ishata Thomas met with Qatar Mining where she showcased Sierra Leone’s data-driven mineral potentials as revealed by the Nationwide Airborne Geophysical Survey. She also engaged Qatar Tourism in areas of cooperation and collaboration to boost Sierra Leone’s tourism sector.
